Live scoring silent films

The opening titles of the film are on screen with our equipment set up in front, ready to go.

We had the great pleasure of improvising a score to the 1927 silent film “Berlin: Symphony of a Great City” at the Pink Flamingo cinema this last weekend. There was no rehearsal beforehand – one or two of us might not have even watched the film in its entirety – but we simply chose a base key signature for each act of the film and with the aid of a few favourite sequence patterns we developed the whole piece as it went along. Apologies for the technical glitch that meant we missed recording the first few minutes.. but the rest came out sounding not too bad if we do say so ourselves. We enjoyed the experience very much and will be looking for more opportunities like this in future, for sure.
